Scenario
Armand, a 6-year-old boy, is accused of crossing the line against his best friend in elementary school. Norway’s official competition for “Best International Feature Film” I understand why it won the Camera d’Or at Cannes 2024, but for the love of my life, I couldn’t watch the film past the halfway point. An incompetent teacher-administrator duo invites a single mother to her son’s school to discuss an incident involving her son and his friends. It’s a great premise, and Armand held my rapt attention, thanks also to the fantastic opening shot and general camerawork up until that point. But then it goes into complacency, and I still don’t know what the director is going for, with a combination of improvised dance sequences and the actor laughing for 3 minutes per song. That’s where it all started, and the whole affair after that becomes frustrating because you never recover from it. (Seen at MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024)
